About Us

CyclingPeaks Software™ was developed by the leading experts in power training. The creators CyclingPeaks Software are Hunter Allen, one of the top cycling coaches in the world training with Power meters and Kevin Williams a top computer programmer. Numerous contributions were made by Andy Coggan, Ph.D., widely recognized as the top cycling exercise physiologist developing power and training programs with power meters.

CyclingPeaks Software was born from the desire of a Cycling Coach and one of his Athletes trying desperately to use the power meter more effectively. The "Athlete" was an "early adopter" of the power meter and also had a cycling coach, but knew that there was more to be learned from the power meter than just average watts. The "Coach" on the same hand, knew that the power meter truly represented a "quantum leap" in endurance cycling training, but was frustrated and unsure of how to best use the power meter as a performance-enhancing tool for his athletes.

Both the Coach and the Athlete decided that they needed to know more about training with power meters and that they should attend the first seminar of it's kind in the U.S., The Training with Power Seminar promoted by USA Cycling in June of 2002. From listening to the seminar presenters, it became very clear that the software to analyze power files was incredibly lacking in both sophistication and ease of use. Too many Excel™ macros, spreadsheets, hacked together graphs and "wish" lists for software were in the seminar. Each presenter at the Seminar had basically a wish list of what they wanted from a power meter software program and there was nothing out there that came even close. From this experience, the athlete, which just happened to be one of the top software programmers in the country, and the coach decided they would develop, design, and make the software for all to use. Their vision was to create a piece of software that would change how athletes and coaches were able to view the data, track changes in fitness, highlight weaknesses, and give focus to an athletes training. This was all to be done so that anyone could use the software and not have to have a PhD in computer programming or exercise physiology in order to use it!

From these basic tenants, CyclingPeaks Software began to take shape! Along the way, the Coach and the Athlete both found many insights into their own training, the way that they approached training with a power meter, and the many factors that were involved in training with a power meter. As a consequence of these software developments, the Coach and the Athlete began to discover things that no one else had been talking about within the cycling community and also no one had even looked at since up to that point, no one had access to the graphs, charts and presentation of data that they had. One of the great resources that the Coach and Athlete discovered was the 'infamous' wattage list on Topica.com. They read, lurked, posted and listened to what the participants of this forum suggested and begin to implement many of the suggestions put out on the 'list'.

Finally, the Coach and Athlete decided they needed some more advice, consultations, and help from one of the power specialist. So they called the "Scientist". Of course, the Scientist was excited to be approached and was very enthusiastic and helpful to the cause as now the Scientist was able to start to look at the training with a power meter in the way that he wanted it to be done. The Scientist was able to implement his ideas, thoughts and at the same time provide "defense" for the different aspects, and functions, charts and graphs that CyclingPeaks Software created.

Some of the exciting collaborations of the Coach, Athlete and Scientist, have been the development of: "Peaks", Training Stress Score (TSS), Intensity Factor (IF), Normalized Power (NP), Power Profiling, a mean maximal power graph viewed algorithmically, an integrated diary and analysis program for power files, "Instant Insight" as the Athlete home page, the .wko or workout file, ability to read any brand of power meter file, and also "Bulk Importing" of past files.

CyclingPeaks Software was developed with many, many hours of hard work, dedication, sacrifices, excited discussions and brainstorming sessions and plenty of cups of coffee! We hope you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed creating it and we know that CyclingPeaks Software will really make a difference in how you view your power meter data.

The power is in your hands now!
